Whaddaplayaaaa! However, despite that glamorous knock, Harris has handed Australia a rare innings defeat. Last time they folded up by an innings was on March 21st 1998 in Calcutta. Thanks Tobes for doing the commentary from tea. It must have been great fun.

The game was lost on day 1 when Australia folded up for a below-par 209. The pitch remained batting friendly throughout and South Africa bossed around with the bat and the ball till Mitch came on to play an entertaining knock.

Kallis: "It's [captaincy] a tough job but it was made easier by guys giving advice around. We came back and rectified, at least in the first two Tests. Full credit to South Africa for playing as well as they did here. Our batting was not up to it in the first innings. Full credit to both the teams; the standard of cricket was very attractive. There is no doubt that with one-day series and 20-20, both teams will put up a good show. These are two very good cricket sides and will be for no of years to come. As a result of the last two months the rivalry is getting bigger and bigger. I have a fair bit of cricket left in me as i hope the senior South Africans. I have enjoyed the contest. "

This was Steve Bucknor's last Test. That's it from us. Daniel Flynn led the defiance with 67 and Brendon McCullum hustled 84 as India eased off after tea. But though the innings defeat was avoided after a 76-run partnership with Iain O'Brien, India needed just 32 balls to knock off the 39 runs needed.

McCullum was decidedly fortunate to survive a leg-before shout from Munaf Patel when he was on three, and Simon Taufel missed a bat-pad catch when he had 67. But those apart, he played his strokes freely, with MS Dhoni not employing too many close-in fielders and more than content to give him singles. With the field spread, he cut the ball with immense power and played a couple of pulls too as the innings defeat was avoided.

O'Brien defended stoutly and hit a couple of boundaries himself as the partnership assumed frustrating proportions. Almost inevitably, it was Harbhajan that provided succour, though there was more than an element of doubt about the bat-pad decision that ended O'Brien's resistance. He could have few complaints though after the third umpire had given him the benefit of a run-out call.

Smart Stats

India's ten-wicket win in Hamilton was their 32nd overseas and their fifth in New Zealand. Harbhajan was at the forefront, bowling round the wicket and flighting the ball into the few rough patches. He varied his pace cleverly and the bounce in the pitch made tackling him a most arduous proposition.

Flynn started the day in positive fashion, cutting and pulling Zaheer Khan for fours, but Ross Taylor struggled terribly against Ishant Sharma, who had bowled him in the first innings. It was left to Flynn to keep the scoreboard ticking and he did that with two guided fours behind point when Munaf was introduced into the attack.

It took New Zealand 42 overs to bring up 100 and Flynn then cut Ishant beautifully through cover to bring up his half-century from 118 balls. The applause had barely died down though when Taylor, who had eked out just four from 29 balls, slashed a Munaf delivery straight to Virender Sehwag at gully.

Jesse Ryder was fortunate that the uppish drive with which he got off the mark just evaded Harbhajan at cover, but there was nothing lucky about two ferocious pull strokes that went for four and six off Zaheer. But thoughts of a sensational counterattack, as in the first innings, vanished soon before lunch as Harbhajan came round the wicket to trap him plumb in front.

New Zealand's plight would have been much worse if MS Dhoni had not put down a catch off Flynn when he had made 55. Harbhajan turned away in disappointment as the chance went down, but it was only a matter of time before India made further inroads.

James Franklin, selected on the basis of robust batting form as well as his bowling, never looked at ease, and a scoop to point was safely taken by Munaf. When Flynn was caught at short leg off bat and pad, it brought Daniel Vettori to the crease, but though he played two magnificent off-drives, there was no repeat of the heroics that had saved face in the first innings. Harbhajan arrowed one in at the body and Vettori could only get a thin inside-edge that Dhoni did very well to hold on to after it brushed the thigh.

That gave Harbhajan his 23rd five-wicket haul and it was something of a surprise when Dhoni decided to take the new ball 10 minutes before tea. Though McCullum and O'Brien kept then kept India at bay for an hour, it wasn't a costly gamble, and Sehwag wasn't even required to open as Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid finished things off with a flurry off fours. One more jinx ended by an Indian team that has now won four of its last six Tests.

Dileep Premachandran is an associate editor at Cricinfo

© Cricinfo

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173938731330346792.post-63813691063510901792009-03-20T06:36:00.001-07:002009-03-20T06:36:48.294-07:00New Zealand vs India 3rd Day Highlights 1st Test 2009

II

III

Another great century by Sachin Tendulkar (his 42nd) that built up a 1st innings lead of 241 in quick time. New Zealand were disciplined with the ball and sprightly in the field, but despite a lot of moisture in the air after overnight rain, there was no real menace from the bowlers. By the time the players went off for bad light, India were just a run behind, though there would have been some disappointment at the fact that well-set batsmen didn't go on to make bigger scores.

There was still Tendulkar though. Having taken 11 balls to get off the mark, he eased himself into rhythm slowly, but there were some sparkling strokes in the final session. There were cover-drives off front and back foot, precise cuts and deft nudges off the pads. His best shot though was a gorgeous on-drive off Chris Martin, a stroke he followed up with an impudent ramp over slips off Iain O'Brien. New Zealand were left to reflect on a missed chance when Tendulkar had made just 13 and miscued a pull off Daniel Vettori just beyond Daniel Flynn at midwicket.

That late flourish enlivened proceedings after New Zealand had established something of a tourniquet after tea. With Vettori accurate and Jesse Ryder wheeling away for five maidens with his medium pace, Tendulkar and VVS Laxman were becalmed. The scoring rate for the partnership was two an over, and there were some streaky strokes, inside egdes and a Laxman pull that just evaded O'Brien at deep square leg. When the new ball was taken, India were still 41 behind and New Zealand struck immediately, with Martin finding the edge to first slip.

Yuvraj Singh survived a few alarms, playing one superb cover-drive off the disappointing Kyle Mills, and with Tendulkar raising the tempo, the new ball didn't do the damage that New Zealand would have wished for. It had been much the same story in the morning after Sehwag's departure, though the dismissals of Gambhir and Dravid after lunch did redress the balance somewhat.

Play started 15 minutes late because of overnight rain and there was moisture around to interest the seamers. But the breakthrough New Zealand sought arrived courtesy some poor cricket from the Indians. Gambhir played Mills into the covers and set off for two. But with James Franklin making good ground and hitting the stumps direct, Sehwag was well short of his ground. He had made 24 from 21 balls and his body language betrayed his disgust as he walked off.

Gambhir took his mind off the fiasco with a neat clip through midwicket off Mills as New Zealand sought to keep the runs down and build up some pressure. It didn't happen. Dravid has been a hesitant starter in recent times, but a glance for four off Martin and a lovely cut off Mills allowed him to play himself in.

Gambhir was especially strong off his pads, walking down the pitch to work the ball through midwicket, and he also put the loose balls away with powerful cuts and late glances. Franklin induced an edge off the first ball he bowled, but didn't really generate enough pace to be a menace, and there was little threat too from O'Brien. India didn't rattle along at Sehwag pace, but they weren't snail-slow either and Vettori was rapidly running out of options by the time he brought himself on with 10 minutes to go for lunch.

The two rotated the strike and though there were passages of relative quiet, the loose ball was invariably put away. That was especially true right after lunch, with Vettori and Martin taken for several boundaries. But Martin struck just when things were looking bleak, coming round the wicket to induce the edge through to Brendon McCullum. Gambhir had made 72 from 135 balls.

Dravid defended as methodically as ever, but it wasn't all dour stuff. He cut the ball beautifully and the run-rate didn't suffer after Gambhir's departure. Another stroke past point off Mills took him to a half-century from 108 balls and when he followed it with a lovely cover-drive off O'Brien, things were looking ominous. But O'Brien had the final say, getting one to nip back a shade off the seam and hit the top of off stump.

With Tendulkar and Laxman in obdurate mood though, the bowlers couldn't press on. But by keeping things quiet, they've given themselves a glimmer of a chance, Tendulkar notwithstanding.

Dileep Premachandran is an associate editor at Cricinfo

© Cricinfo

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173938731330346792.post-62180780813118029422009-03-18T06:39:00.001-07:002009-03-18T06:39:33.836-07:00India vs New Zealand 1st Test Highlights Day 1
India in New Zealand Test Series - 1st Test - Scorecard
New Zealand v India 2008/09 season - Day 1 Highlights
Played at Seddon Park, Hamilton, on 18,19,20,21,22 March 2009 (5-day match)

1st Test: New Zealand v India - Day 1 Highlights

Watch cricket highlights of Day 1, 1st Test - India vs New Zealand from Hamilton, played on March 18, 2009.

Watch cricket highlights of 1st test - India vs New Zealand - Day 1’s play from Hamilton, played on March 18, 2009.

Scoreline: New Zealand 279 all out - Daniel Vettori 118, Jesse Ryder 102. India's awe-inspiring batting order witnessed a rare collapse today and the visitors were skittled out for a paltry 149 runs in 36.3 overs and the score could have been embarrassing but for Virender Sehwag (40) and Rohit Sharma (43 not out).

New Zealand chased down the meagre target in just 23.2 overs after Jesse Ryder (63) gave them a flying start and Martin Guptill (57 not out) stayed till the end to see the side through in what turned out to be a one-sided contest at the Eden Park. It turned out to be a memorable outing for Jesse Ryder who also scalped three wickets for 29 runs in his nine overs.

The Indians, who had already clinched the series, had to be content with a 3-1 scoreline with the Kiwis restoring some pride by convincingly winning the last game. Both the teams would renew their rivalry in a three-match Test series starting March 18.

PTI.
PTI

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173938731330346792.post-31243252046714455082009-03-12T14:57:00.001-07:002009-03-12T14:57:45.924-07:004 th ODI: New Zealand v India

Watch Cricket Video Highlights of the 4th ODI - India v New Zealand, 4th ODI, Hamilton, March 11, 2009. Sehwag reached three-figures off 60 balls with a signature six and his awe-inspiring hitting overshadowed Gautam Gambhir's near run-a-ball half-century. Daniel Vettori and the rest of the New Zealand bowlers were powerless in the face of the onslaught and what had seemed a challenging target was chased down with ridiculous ease. Even the two stoppages due to rain couldn't stem the run-deluge with Sehwag completing his century as early as the 18th over.

Astonishingly, only five runs came behind square on the off side, generally Sehwag's favourite hitting area. But the batsman still displayed his range of strokes in one Iain O'Brien over, hitting four fours off five balls: a powerful pull to midwicket, a drive that nearly took the bowler's head off, a whip off his pads and a pull-drive over mid-on to a short delivery.

In an innings filled with scintillating strokeplay, Sehwag was at his most murderous when play resumed following a rain break at the 10-over mark. With intermittent showers holding up play at regular intervals, Sehwag decided to make sure there was an early finish - in a five-over period, starting from the 12th over, he moved from 52 to 92. The high backlift showed his intentions as he set about dismantling O'Brien, Ewen Thompson and Jacob Oram. Only Daniel Vettori's intelligent variations of pace managed to draw a measure of respect from Sehwag.

Spare a thought for the debutant Thompson, who sends down gentle medium-pacers of the sort New Zealand so favoured in the 90s. After more than eight years of toil on the domestic scene, he was rewarded with a place on the national team, only to come up against a rampaging Sehwag on a small ground and a benign track with field restrictions in place. His four overs were taken for 42 runs, Sehwag's mighty hit into the scoreboard behind midwicket being the pick of the strokes against him.

Top Curve
Smart Stats

* Virender Sehwag's unbeaten 125 is his third ODI hundred in New Zealand, where he averages more than in any country in which he has played more than one match. In 11 games there he has hit three hundreds, for an average of 55.80 and a strike rate of 100.90. He is the only Indian to score more than one ODI century in New Zealand.
* In his last 21 ODIs, Sehwag has scored 1240 runs at an average of 62 and a strike rate of 131.49.
* In 24 innings, Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir have added 1380 runs at an average of 60 and run-rate of 6.61 per over. Among Indian opening pairs, who have scored at least 750 runs, this pair has the highest average and strike rate.
* Sehwag and Gambhir added 201 at a rate of 8.55 runs per over, which is the second-fastest double-century partnership in ODIs. Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga added 286 against England in 2006 at a rate of 8.98 runs per over.
* Ewen Thompson's economy rate of 10.50 is among the most expensive by a debutant. Among those who bowled at least four overs on debut, only four have a worse economy rate.

Bottom Curve

There was some respite for the bowlers when they bowled at Gambhir, who played the straight man to Sehwag, just nudging the ball around to pick up the singles. There weren't too many big hits, one of the standout shots of his innings being a deft leg-glance off Oram.

The Gambhir-Sehwag show was reminiscent of the frenetic hitting from Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder in the previous ODI at Hamiltion. The New Zealand pair put on a century stand this time around as well after Vettori chose to bat on a pitch offering some early assistance to the bowlers, but it was a less frenzied affair. It was the perfect base for New Zealand, but with Ross Taylor and Oram failing to fire again, India were able to scrap their way back into the game. Peter McGlashan, who made an inventive half-century, and Grant Elliott were unfazed by a couple of rain breaks and cobbled together 95 runs off the last 10 overs.

Ryder did much of the early scoring, but had a torrid time against the new-ball bowlers. Praveen Kumar's away-swingers had him fishing outside offstump and he also struggled to cope with Zaheer Khan's indippers.

At the other end, McCullum made a serene start; content to leave anything outside off, and always on the lookout for the tip-and-run single. At one stage, he had 3 off 20 deliveries. However once he got his eye in, he picked up the pace and the doddering run-rate rose towards a respectable six per over.

India's part-time spinners were brought on to stem the runs and both Yuvraj Singh and Yusuf Pathan did their job. Yuvraj was unlucky not to have dismissed McCullum - Mahendra Singh Dhoni botching a simple stumping chance - but got rid of Ryder; a slog-sweep swirling to Suresh Raina at square leg.

Taylor gifted his wicket soon after and with Martin Guptill not finding any fluency, it was left to McCullum to push the tempo. The Indian fast bowlers took some important wickets, including that of McCullum, during the batting Powerplay (from the 34th over) to leave New Zealand struggling at 185 for 5 after 38 overs.

It was left to McGlashan and Elliott to rectify the damage. McGlashan showed off his repertoire of sweeps - orthodox, paddle, and reverse - even against the quicks to keep the runs flowing while Elliott adopted a more orthodox approach. Fifty-one runs came off the final four overs after the second rain break to help set a target that was expected to test India's batting might. However, Sehwag and Gambhir barely broke into a sweat when they came into bat.

Siddarth Ravindran is a sub-editor at Cricinfo

© Cricinfo

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173938731330346792.post-66180607847841295202009-03-10T12:10:00.001-07:002009-03-10T12:10:58.425-07:00Disclaimer
Privacy Policy:

Keeping in mind the importance of privacy of personal information of visitors to this site, the following is a little info on the kinds of personal information that is collected as part of the process of serving Advertisements on this site, and how this information is safeguarded. India have gone up 2-0, and though the margin of victory - 58 runs - may indicate they won convincingly, New Zealand gave them a serious scare. Ryder and McCullum started off superbly , adding 166 in pretty quick time.

India were poor in the field to start with, dropping the openers and conceding quite a few runs by way of misfields and overthrows. However, Raina sparked somewhat of a revival after running out McCullum and Yuvraj followed suit, getting rid of Ross Taylor.

New Zealand lost eight wickets for 95 runs and that lost the match for them. There was superb resistance towards the end and it seemed at one point that Mills and Southee could make the Indians pay for letting it slip after they had been in command throughout the middle overs.

However, the visitors were just one wicket away from sealing a win, and once Mills was gone, so was the match for the home team. A competitive game nevertheless, and India have ensured they can't lose this series from here on.

McCullum: "We didn't bowl well enough. It was amazing batting from the Indians, but from our point of view we weren't accurate enough. I did enjoy the opportunity of captaining my side, but unfortunately we weren't good enough. The fact that Butler was injured halfway through the spell and that Oram wasn't able to finish his spell did affect us. A good opening stand was the only chance we had, but despite the slide later on, I'm proud of the way we played."

Dhoni: "It's disappointing we dropped those catches early on, the bowling was simply not up to the mark. It was a pleasure to watch Sachin, and Yuvraj, once he gets going, it's hard to stop him, especially on such grounds. Our batting is our strength, and if you post a big total you can put any side under pressure even if you are playing with four bowlers. We were worried about the scares during the opening stand and the late resistance, but it was all a matter of getting wickets which we managed to do"

Sachin Tendulkar is the Man of the Match: "I started off well in Wellington and was able to carry that form into this one.

I haven't played as many ODIs in New Zealand as a result of injury, and it feels great to have scored my first century here. The pitch was excellent, so was the ground. You need to get used to the dimensions here and bat accordingly."

That's all from here folks, thanks for tuning in.
