2nd Twenty20: Australia v South Africa at MCG - Highlights

Full Highlights

Australia beat South Africa by 6 wickets in the second and final Twenty20 International at the Gabba, thanks to some composed batting by Michael Hussey and some lusty hitting by Cameron White.

Set a challenging total of 158 to win, from 20 overs, the Proteas made early inroads to dismiss the Australian openers in the seventh over conceding just 40 runs during that time.

Shaun Marsh showed promise with a boundary and a six but could not manage more than 15 runs. David Warner, the sensation from the first T20, was found struggling as the Proteas kept rotating their bowlers and never allowed the batsmen to settle. He only managed 7 runs.

It was then left up to experienced candidates, Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey, to do the rescue act for Australia and that’s exactly what the duo did. They put on a 61-run partnership in 39 balls and put the hosts in pursuit of victory.

The turning point of the match came when Mark Boucher misjudged a regulation stumping off the bowling off South African skipper, Johan Botha. Michael Hussey, who was way out of his crease, survived a life and made the Proteas pay a few overs later when he smashed 3 consecutive boundaries off the bowling of debutant Wayne Parnell.

Ponting (38) finally perished to a good run out by Albie Morkel. David Hussey (2) did not last long either, being caught in the deep by a stunning running catch by JP Duminy, who caught it running backwards.

Parnell's bad luck continued in the 18th over of the match when Duminy misjudged a catch off Cameron White. The ball trickled to the boundary for a four and that over ended up conceding 19 runs for Australia, which practically put them in a position from where they could not lose.

Cameron continued his power-hitting which ended with a huge six to long on which sealed the match for his team with 7 balls to spare. Hussey made an undefeated 53 off 33 balls while White scored an 18-ball, 40. Both batsmen hit 5 boundaries and 1 six in a 69-run partnership which came off just 35 balls.

Earlier in the day, South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first. Hashim Amla (26) and Herschelle Gibbs (6) started off cautiously but both openers fell in the div of one over.

Vaughn van Jaarsveld too fell, for a duck, without troubling the scoreboard. The burden of putting up a challenging total then fell on the shoulders of JP Duminy who scored a valiant half-century in the first T20.

Duminy did not disappoint and put up brief partnerships with Mark Boucher and Albie Morkel to give his bowlers a fighting total.

His unbeaten 69 included 7 boundaries and 2 sixes. Boucher (19) and Morkel (19) gave him good company at the crease, during which the run rate of South Africa rose from under 6 runs an over to close to eight runs an over.

Neil McKenzie (8) then partnered Duminy to reach a total of 157-5.

This match also saw Australian opener Matthew Hayden, who announced his retirement earlier today, take his last lap of honour around the Gabba in a blue Mustang along with his three children.

Hayden was overwhelmed with the crowd-support at the Gabba and said that he would miss being away from the game he loved.

After winning the T20 series 2-0, Australia and South Africa will now go head-to-head in a series which consists of 5 ODIs, the first of which will be played on January 16 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
